Best Practices in Voice User Interface Design

(Tutorial at the GLDV-Jahrestagung 2005)
Wed, 30 Mar 2005

Good Voice User Interface (VUI) Design is an essential part in the development of voice applications. This has been more or less ignored since the early days of IVR systems, or at least it has not been given the right attention. Dedicated professionals are needed to create a VUI that is usable and functional, but also user-friendly and user-centered, all at the same time.

This tutorial is meant to be an eye-opener for the industrial and academic community working in this field. Best Practices of VUI design will be a central part of the tutorial. Theoretical discussions will be enriched with live demonstrations of deployed voice applications.

In addition, there will be an introduction to the "Voice Application Management System" (VAMS) VoiceObjects X5, which provides a Dialog Designer component supporting the development of state-of-the-art Voice User Interfaces.

The tutorial will consist of five major parts:

  • 09:00–09:15: Opening
  • 09:15–10:00: Introduction to Voice User Interface Design (Tom Houwing)
  • 10:00–10:45: Introduction to Voice Application Management Systems (Tiemo Winterkamp)
  • 10:45–11:00: Break
  • 11:00–12:00: VUI Best Practices (Tom Houwing & Tiemo Winterkamp)

Panel Discussion Central aspects of future voice and multimodal applications (14:15–15:15)
