SIG Education and Profession, Introduction

Chairs: Christian Wolff, Irene Cramer (email: Irene.Cramer@gmx.de)

The special interest group (SIG) is concerned with the following two aspects:
  1. Teaching computational linguistics as well as related disciplines;
  2. Job prospects of the graduates.
Only recently, professors, lecturers, and scientists in Computational Linguistics became aware of the necessity to give more attention to their teaching.

In this context, the following questions are of particular interest: What are the principles of good teaching? How should one organize and accomplish lectures and seminars in Computational Linguistics? Which learning aids have to be created, to promote self-directed studies? How should professors and lecturers prepare for their courses, and what do they need to facilitate this preparation? These questions are particularly interesting in our area, since there is still no didactics for Computational Linguistics as exists for Computer Science, Philology, and Mathematics.

The SIG therefore is engaged in the following projects:

  • Organization of a workshop to exchange information [programme];
  • Creation of a network of didactically interested professors and lecturers;
  • Systematization of already existing work in this area;
  • Development of exemplary courses (especially main topics) and curricula.
Naturally, the success of teaching in the Computational Linguistics is not the only issue in college education; students are to be prepared for their later working life. Therefore the SIG is in addition concerned with the following projects:
  • Organization of an internship database (work in progress!);
  • Internet portal of job prospects (exemplary CVs, work areas, companies & institutions) and job postings (work in progress!)
The SIG has just started to work on the projects described above, we are therefore happy about everyone who would like to join our SIG and take part in the work. Please let us know, if you are interested in participating in our work or if you have any suggestion or idea that you would like to share with us...
